Underwater preview

Here is a little preview of a new project I am working on called Underwater. It's a comic strip of sorts. Facing myself with a new challenge of narrating a story through multiple scenes. I've always condensed them into one image. I also very much enjoy writing but have never before combined the two. Seems like an obvious evolution...

lost pool

This is a final of a sketch I dug up from the summer. I made this after reading about the lack of public swimming pools in urban environments and how this can affect city dwelling children. In particular those who can't afford to go away during their vacations. I had originally intended on drawing a tiny pool in the middle to signify its "overcrowding" but was told by a friend that the loss of pool had more of an impact. Always helps to have a second opinion!

Falling Suits

This was a response to an article depicting the desire people have for job security, for those who have already been successful as well as for those who are just starting out. People who have been working for many years, who have climbed the ranks of their companies are just as worried about keeping their positions as newcomers are to finding employment. I thought the subject matter to be bleak and so kept the palette black and white... seemed fitting.

Mellow Yellow

Trying to work more freely... (sloppily?). You never know how it'll turn out. I do tend to shy away from yellow as it can really dominate an image but I think the watercolor tones it down a bit. Can't wait to post the big editorial piece for Babiekins Magazine but unfortunately it has yet to come out. Already working on the next issue but that won't be out until October! Patience...

From my sketch book

Some pages form my sketchbook. Sometimes I get nervous about drawing something inside the beautiful cream pages of a Moleskin but when an idea hits, no matter how primitive, it's good to get it down. I do get carried away with detail (shading in particular) at times but I often scan these and use them for final pieces. It's like having a file of images ready to be used or merged with new drawings. Very handy.
